As we all well know, the world is crumbling under our rubbish, recyclable or not.
This page shares practical knowledge about how to minimise the impact of our rubbish at the General and at large. Observing the requirements by Bristol Waste is crucial, for only then will our waste be recycled in a useful way, to generate biofuel and be disposed of efficiently.
If you have any information, tips or suggestions, please share them with all residents and email to hello@bgta.org.uk.
Do you know your garbage from your rubbish? Do the quiz!
Here are the three golden rules to make everybody's life much easier and help the Planet as well.

1. Take the tape off cardboard and break it down properly.

2. Put your food waste into the food waste bin and not in the general waste.

3. Sort out your recycling properly, put the right items in the correct bin.

Here on The General estate, we take our recycling and waste seriously! As you may know, Bristol is a very green city and the Nr 1 core city in England for recycling so, by recycling well, we are doing our bit to help retain that position and improve recycling rates.
Onsite there are two bin store, both now monitored by CCTV, one located in French Yard and the other under the Iron Foundry, where you can recycle the following:
• Cardboard and cartons
• Paper
• Glass
• Plastics and cans
• Food
There are also containers for general waste.
The coloured illustration below, Bristol Waste’s Let’s Get Our Recycling Sorted, sets out exactly what can and cannot be recycled.
Our 3 top tips for recycling are:
-
Recycle your food waste. In Bristol, it’s converted into biomethane to power buses, it drives turbines to produce electricity for 6,500 homes and a byproduct is bio-fertiliser. Ask the Concierge team if you do not have a food waste caddy (you can line it with any plastic bag or newspaper).
-
Break down your cardboard boxes, having first removed any tape. The cardboard recycling bins are always full, often because boxes are not first broken down. If you have very large boxes, ask the Concierge team for help.
-
Do not leave items that cannot be recycled in the bin stores! If not, the cost of removal comes from our service charge.
The last point is really important as so often the Concierge team has to clear away items that have been dumped on the floor of the bin stores.
So you have many items which you need to get rid of and you can’t leave them in the bin store - what do you do? Some options:
-
Advertise them on sites such as Facebook Marketplace
-
Give them away to families or friends
-
Take them to charity shops
If these options aren’t suitable, take to one of the three Household Reuse and Recycling Centres (HRRCs) in Bristol, details of which are shown below. Alternatively, contact Bristol City Council to have them removed https://bristolwastecompany.co.uk/bulky-waste/ Rates are as little as £50 for 3 items such as sofas, armchairs and futons and even less for mattresses and bed frames.
